Social change movements arose not only due to a lack of freedom (whose ultimate expression is the dictatorship) but to the existence of structural conditions of deep social inequality. And things have not changed. There is not the same type of political violence but never had Central America such extreme levels of inequality as now, such high percentages of people living below the poverty line. Never before many Latin American countries had known such extreme forms of social and structural violence and life was worth so little. That is, the insurgent movements that now are seen outdated, stopped

Dr. Pau Perez is a psychiatrist at the Resource Center in Mental Health and Human Rights, Head of the Complex Trauma Unit, Hospital La Paz in Madrid, Director of the Post-Doctoral Degree Mental Health in Political Violence and Catastrophe, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and author of 12 books and 50 national and international papers on psychosocial and community work in mental health and human rights.
