Psychotherapy, Memory and Memoir

Nancy Henderson-James

The excavating of my memories was multi-layered and took place over several years. Because leaving Africa at 16 had been sudden and unplanned, re-entry into the United States was emotionally wrought. Being from Africa was almost too strange to talk about to Americans. I coped by submerging my African memories. In my late 40's, I undertook psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My therapist and I talked for 6 years. Through the process of therapy, I created the story of my life.
