A Place of Healing: Finding sanctuary in the free and protective space of sandtray

Karen Daniel

How does the sandtray become a sanctuary, creating a sacred temenos, a place for healing? What happens to turn ordinary miniatures and objects into symbols that give us a language to ‘voice’ the unspeakable, to find, know and express the depth of who we are and what we are feeling? How does this process guide us safely and gently in our healing and growth? An invaluable tool for therapists working with traumatised clients is understanding the natural healing process activated by sandplay in the presence of a skilled sandplay therapist: “....deep in the unconcious there is an autonomous tendency, given the proper conditions, for the psyche to heal itself”.

Karen Daniel

Karen Daniel has many years of experience with Sandplay Therapy and is passionate about its profound therapeutic potential. Her original Sandplay training - over 25 years ago - was with Patrick Jansen, who at the time was one of the few Jungian analysts and Sandplay therapists working in Australia who had trained in Zurich at the Jung Institute with Dora Kalff (Jung’s student who developed Sandplay). Karen has worked with sandplay since that time, integrating a Jungian approach with transpersonal and expressive therapies. Since her original training in Expressive Therapies and Transpersonal Studies in 1981, she has been working in this field, facilitating personal development groups and training programs around Australia and New Zealand from the late 1980s through the 1990s. Karen has been in private practice as a Sandplay therapist and psychotherapist/counsellor using Expressive Therapies since 1990. She also regularly offers Sandtray Therapy training programs for therapists.
