Contrasting Chronic Schizophrenia with Frontotemporal Dementia A Neurocognitive Perspective

Hui-Minn Chan

Schizophrenia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) have historically been considered two very different disorders. Recent research, however, has shown that there are important similarities between chronic schizophrenia and FTD in terms of clinical presentation, neurocognition, and neuropathology. The main aim of this research is to compare and contrast neurocognition in chronic schizophrenia and FTD.

Retrospective neuropsychological data of 38 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 38 patients with FTD was obtained from a clinical database. Tests were categorised into 15 cognitive domains and an average z-score derived for each of the domains. Statistical analyses were conducted using “traditional” difference of means analyses as well as equivalence testing.
