Clinical and research diagnoses in psychosis: testing algorithms for deriving diagnoses from clinical data-sets.

Grant Sara

The scale and population coverage of administrative datasets make them a potentially valuable research tool in psychosis. These datasets break care into episodes, such as hospitalisations or community contacts. An individual may receive many diagnoses over time. However, psychosis research usually requires allocation of a single diagnosis (e.g. Schizophrenia) per person. There are many possible methods for deriving such a diagnosis, and limited evidence about which method is most reliable.
