The situation of Orphans in Malawi and Tanzania

Gabriele Kadanka

The organisation "Eine Weltgruppe" carries a project to support orphans in Tanzania. Presently, the project takes care for 330 orphans in 12 villages. Observing the children and by talking to them and using simple questionnaires, I learned about the orphan's demands, especially in respect to their emotional feelings. In order to do that, I visited them in their schools or living quarters and contacted them with the help of local interpreters.

The results of the interviews with 84 kids from Tanzania as well as the results of a similar enquiry of 168 kids in Malawi are given and a tabulation of the kid’s problems and wishes are presented in a graphical form. It turned out, that most of the children felt alone and forsaken with their fears and traumata. Most of them expressed the wish for emotional attention. Otherwise, also the promise for a safe future probably favours to relive the children's insecurities and fear. This might be accomplished by admittance to school followed by the apprenticeship for a desired profession.
