Traces of Shame

Dr Doris McIlwain

In Patrick Susskind’s novel Perfume, the protagonist, Grenouille, is able to concoct fragrances that overwhelm those inhaling them with a sense of the fragile beauty of lost innocence. Liberally using perfume in this way he brings to control even a crowd who, seconds before, would have killed him: they halt their attack and revere him.

Dr Doris McIlwain

Doris is a psychoanalytically-inflected personality psychologist and psychotherapist who studies emotion, movement and memory. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, she takes these interests into field and laboratory studies of resilience in elite cricketers, dancers, yoga practitioners and psychotherapists. With her masters and doctoral students she explores resilience in an array of culturally challenging life contexts. She teaches Personality and the Philosophy of Psychoanalysis in her role as Associate Professor at Macquarie University, and publishes in psychology, cognitive science, philosophy and art journals.
