Working the Masterson way - Differential diagnosis and the unique Psychotherapeutic Algorithms in the treatment of Personality Disorders

Daleen Macklin

The Developmental Self and Object Relations approach (DSOR) of Dr James Masterson and the International Masterson Institute has been developed both empirically and clinically for over five decades. It is the aim of the current paper to theoretically and clinically explore the various disorders of self in terms of their unique developmental pathways, their split self-object units, their unique and differentiating features, and the various technical approaches needed to reach the abandonment depression and Impaired Real self in each disorder.

Emphasis will also be given to the therapeutic stance, short(er) and long (er)-term therapy options and counter-transferential difficulties frequently encountered in working with personality disorders. All concepts will be illustrated through the discussion of clinical vignettes.
