Depression in children and adolescents: Assessment, awareness and treatment

Dr Syed Naqvi

Depressive disorders are often genetic and familial recurrent illnesses associated with tremendous disease burden and at times with worse outcome of suicidality. It also presents unique challenges in the transcultural settings, especially children and adolescents from a Muslim background and living in western societies. An early identification and effective prompt treatment may reduce the impact of depression on the family, social and
academic functioning in youths and may reduce the risk of suicide, substance abuse and persistence of depressive disorders into adulthood. Evidence supported treatment interventions have emerged in psychotherapy and medication treatment of childhood depressive disorders that can guide clinicians to improve outcomes in this population.
