Transcultural issues in psychotherapy

Dr Lea Crisante

Dealing with cultural issues in therapy is typically challenging for clinicians.  This relates to a number of factors, including the complexity of case presentations and inadequate training in transcultural work.  In this lecture, practical issues in conducting therapy will be introduced by examining the cultural bias considered to be inherent in psychological practice.  Participants will be exposed to a number of cases with the aim of providing a framework for conducting assessment and developing a conceptualisation of the presenting problem.  This will occur primarily through the lens of the cultural formulation method endorsed by DSM-IV.  Other skills to be explored include the engagement process and the use of the cultural genogram.
