Psychological interventions in a GP's office

Dr Katriona Herborn

It has been repeatedly found that about 20% of Australian general practice consultations have a psychological component. I am an average female GP, seeing an average of 4 patients per hour for 8 to 9 sessions per week. I intend to log my normal general practice contacts over a 2 week period and record the frequency and types of psychiatric diagnoses and the psychological interventions used in everyday practice. I will also record the other psychological services used to help in the management of each patient and the patient's willingness to accept psychiatric or psychological referral. I'm hoping this study will help in gaining a better understanding of what supports can help Australian GP's in offering patients better treatment of their psychological / psychiatric problems. I'm hoping this study will aid the development of good general practice models in other countries.
