Formation and Transformation of the counsellor.

Dr Irene Alexander

I have been involved in counselling training for the last ten years, developing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in counselling. During that time we have become more and more aware of the process of training as formation for a vocation, and transformation of the novice counsellor so that they may more deeply companion those they journey with in the counselling process.
With an understanding of stages of faith development (Fowler, Genia), images of God (Rizzuto), as well as concepts like true self – false self (Winnicott, Pennington) students engage in their own transformation through awareness of family of origin, relational patterns, images of God.
This paper reports the experiences of students themselves as they reflect on their own journey through the counselling training and into their own practice as counsellors.
