Keeping our spirit strong healing circles

Esme Holmes

Keeping Our Spirit Strong Healing Circles is a healing & wellbeing program focusing on Aboriginal women and trauma recovery in the urban community of La Perouse, NSW Australia. The program consists of three interconnected circles; Trips to Bush: connection with land, story and identifying healing plants & flowers; Deep Listening & Meditation: skills to cope with trauma & grief; Journey of Healing through Art & Culture: printmaking & weaving (stories of healing). The Healing Circles cover a 10 week period and repeat 3 times during the year. The dream is that individuals, families and community members will keep spirit, culture & healing strong, strengthen knowledge, skills and ownership in healing resources and strengthen leadership in the community. Addressing a community of 250-350 peoples. Opens the pathway for Aboriginal employment, training, ownership & trauma recovery. The project is conducted by 2 Women Dreaming Healing Inc. La Perouse and runs over a two and a half year period. This presentation looks at the first series of Healing Circles, stories, art and evaluation which is self reported by the women at the completion of each circle.
