Self Issues in supervising trauma work

Daphne Hewson

When a counsellor brings their work with a traumatised client to supervision there are three emotional worlds to consider: those of the client, the counselor and the supervisor. Supervision is limited if it focuses only on the client’s emotional experiences. Various processes can evolve in and between the counsellor and supervisor such as transference, countertransference, vicarious traumatisation, blunted affect, competitive horror stories, desensitisation and dissociation. In this presentation Daphne will discuss ways in which these critical emotional responses can, and should, be addressed in supervision.
