Adolescence is a challenging time of life, when many young people may need help and guidance from general practitioners. The tasks of adolescence can be overwhelming for some: becoming clear of one’s identity, developing independence, facing issues regarding sexuality, making choices and preparing for direction in their adult lives. Dr Fraser believes the exploratory and imaginative qualities of adolescence can be harnessed to help adolescents understand the strengths and qualities that they can use to find their way forward.
Sometimes referral to ‘adolescent’ specialists or systems are required but Dr Fraser believes that interested General Practitioners have a lot to offer adolescents presenting at risk, to prevent progression from turmoil into major mental health issues. Dr Cathy Fraser will talk from her own practice experience about key factors in gaining trust, and will describe some of the tools and approaches she uses to help adolescents work through their issues.
