Mental health issues in Muslim communities

Dr. Abdul Monaem

This paper looks at mental health issues experienced by boys and men in Muslim communities in Australia. Islam is the core of the culture of many migrants living here. Reports of harassment and discrimination against Muslims appear regularly in newspapers and a surge in anti-Muslim incidents is evident. Expressions of anti- Muslim feelings and anti-Muslim  rhetoric is on the increase in this country. Many Muslims feel alienated since events such as that of September 11, 2001 and the Dr Hanif incident. Living in such a climate, their mental health is severely affected.

This paper explores mental health issues confronting Muslims in Australia. It will also look at the current level of research into the practice of religious values, especially among Muslims, and how it can provide a buffer for coping with religious intolerance.
